Girls and Dolls

doll by Sara Heinrichs (awfulsara) on Flickr

Women like us learned to play with dolls from an early age. We learned to dress them properly, bursh their hair and nurture them with unconditional love. Some may even say that is how we learned to love when no one else was around to show us how.

Straight perfect brunette hair that shined under paper lanterns–ivory plastic skin that moved when I willed it to, a miniature vanity dresser with a miniature gold sleigh bed to match, all occupied the smallest corner of my room.

I tucked them in at night, kissed them on the forehead and hoped that they would dream of stars.

Women like us learned that someday, the dolls would betray us. They would stop listening to us and threaten to run away. So we would punish them; strip them bare and tell them they couldn’t wear paisley dresses anymore. We would sit them in the corner and tell them we would never love them again.

Cobwebs and dust would later start forming in that small corner of the room where our dolls slept. The dust would sit on their eyelids forcing both eyes to slowly close completely.

Time to pack them up in a cardboard box. Put them in the attic and forget they ever happened.

That is how I learned to love.

Federal Reserve’s Transparency is Better Left Up to Economists and Academic Buisness Men Rather than the People–According to Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA)

cmimg_613

Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke

Congress woman Susan Davis (CA-D)

“The Reserve has this autonomy because you do not want politics to influence monetary policy best left to the academics and economists.  Current Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, for example, graduated from Harvard and later earned a Ph.D. in economics.  The system was designed to give the most educated and best trained to make crucial decisions.”– Susan Davis’s exact words written to me justifying Federal Reserve secrecy.

Logging in to check my e-mail today I was surprised to find an e-mail addressed to me from San Diego based Congress woman Susan Davis. At first I thought I had accidentally placed my self on a mailing list, to which I then sputtered inappropriate comments at the innocent computer screen. I despise unwanted mailing lists. Anyways I opened it to find it personally addressed to me regarding the Federal Reserve.

Reading the first paragraph of the e-mail, my memory was spontaneously jogged back into remembering that I did indeed write to Davis nine months prior. About nine months ago, I wrote an investigative paper in my critical thinking class at San Diego City College about the economically damaging  private practices of the Federal Reserve. Part of my paper included an interview aspect, so I thought, “what the hell, lets see what Davis has to say about it.” Before writing to her, I had no real hope in her reading the questions that I posed to her about the Fed, since it had become blatantly obvious that she denies many issues concerning the Fed and does not support any real transparency between Congress and this institution. She does not support H.R 1207, “The Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009,” and refused to co-sponsor the bill even though many San Diego residents have urged her to do so.

Needless to say I was surprised that Davis, or one of her interns, even wrote me back. However my enthusiasm for this response shortly turned into disappointment when I realized that I would never get my questions answered, especially from her. This was a chance for Susan to redeem herself, to prove to me that she cared, to persuade me to believe in the system. Sadly it was uninspiring and downright insulting.

Davis’s responses to my questions were laughable, immature, and ill conceived. Either she should brush up on her politician books or fire her interns. Considering the fact that she did not even answer my questions, it made me even more outraged when she unsuccessfully tried to justify no transparency and oversight by implying that Americans should just trust the Federal Reserve and all business men for that matter because, according to Susan, “The system was designed to give the most educated and best trained to make crucial decisions.” I may not hold a degree in economics from Harvard, but I am sharp enough to know when a private corporation like the Federal Reserve is abusing its power and refusing to let congress investigate exactly what they did with the TARP money.

So Susan, if you really are saying what I think you are saying, then what you are ultimately suggesting is that American citizens are too ignorant to understand the mechanics of this institution and should just tune out. If we did exactly what you are suggesting, which would be leaving important decisions up to the people who are more educated and powerful in that area, would that not totally defeat the whole purpose of Democracy?

However, I should not feel so maddened by this, American politics today no longer engage in conversing intelligently with citizens. My experience is just another prime example among many where our representatives just want us to shut up and deal with it, instead of  trying to open up the table for serious discussion.

Go watch some more reality TV and don’t worry about a thing, because we have wealthy, ivy league scholars to make vital decisions for you, that will directly influence the course and well-being of your life!

Halloween–Naughty Nurse or Promiscuous Kitty?

Halloween, now a holiday only for people over 18 years old!

Halloween, now a holiday only for people over 18 years old!

All right ladies, it’s that time again! Break out your  fish net stockings, 6-inch stilettos, and fake eyelashes cause Halloween is almost here! Come on! This is our one and only time when it is acceptable to bounce around  in half naked costumes (more like alter-egos) and throw all inhibitions and morals out the window! Lets just dress like floozeys and leave all respectability behind!

Halloween is such a strange phenomenon, it blazes a frantic fever that even the most reserved or shyest of women have trouble resisting. Succumbing to the temptation of completely retarding themselves into being objectified; loving it no doubt! Now I admit, I am no saint.Yes I have had a number of Halloween costumes that would shock the pants off my mother. I can see her face now, jaw ajar, hand over mouth, eyes wide with disappointment. One year I was Minnie Mouse, which meant that my “Minnie” dress equaled  Minnie-atruazied; leaving nothing to the imagination. Or a couple years prior when my girlfriends and I were Moulin Rouge girls–I won’t even go into that.

Shamefully, I have indeed allowed myself to be subject to various men drooling all over my girlfriends and I all in the name of Halloween. However I still can’t quite grasp why Halloween gives women the excuse to dress like bimbos? What I want to know is, why Halloween? Why not just dress promiscuous all the time? Or why should it stop at Halloween? Why not Christmas or Thanksgiving?

….giving the words “turkey gobble,” a whole new meaning.

Women Armed with Tools…or not.

rosie.web

Today I decided to take on a household project that has been looming over my head for weeks. Hanging up curtains. It has been about a month now since I moved into the new place, and I am not proud to say the house has been completely vulnerable to “peeping toms”. Being paranoid about walking into the kitchen and living room in my pj’s at night for three weeks, finally ruled to be too exhausting and stressful. Even though I have a very handy top-of-the-line tool box, rechargeable drill and all…I sadly knew I would need some help; a lot. Thus, I picked up the phone and swiftly dialed my handy-dandy step dad, who could probably wrangle an American brown bear while perfectly installing a few curtain rods.

My step dad (the one who bought me the pretty intense tool kit) started measuring, drilling, and sweating as I stood there and watched like a newborn baby opening its eyes for the first time stunned. It’s not like I have never done handy  or “manly jobs” as one would call them, I am quite proud of the doorknob I installed recently, as well as moving some bulky furniture all by my self. But the bottom line is, when it comes to installing, fixing, and maintaining house hold items and do-it-yourself projects, like most women, I found that I never really took the time to learn how to do these things. Namely because deep down I knew that I could get a man to do it for me. This thought that occurred to me, actually sadden me because I knew that if I asked my step dad to show me how to fix something, he would totally take the time to teach me, it was just me who did not want to take the time to learn.

I feel that I pride my self on being very self-sufficient, independent, and able to solve most problems by myself, however today I realized that I have not been holding myself to those same standards when it comes to fixing things around the house. Consequently I felt disgusted by myself for thinking that I do not need to learn certain skills, i.e. hanging up curtain rods, simply because I can have someone else do it for me. Yuck!

I am now vowing to explore my foreign and scary toolbox and learn how to tame it in order to rely on myself more often. Even if I install the doorknob upside down, or make big holes in the wall trying to hang up curtain rods, I will go out and conquer unknown territory all in the name of independence!

My goal with this blog is to offend everyone in the world at least once with my words… so no one has a reason to have a heightened sense of themselves. We are all ignorant, we are all found wanting, we are all bad people sometimes.
